The Project «La Casa de las Estrellas»
On November 15, 2004, 21 children were admitted to the star house. Twelve girls and nine boys. The selection was not easy because most children of Cusco would need protection and the life worthy of a child.
These cheerful and yet sad children are between six and twelve years old. And they want to become doctors, teachers, engineers, artist and truck drivers. Without these visions their lives would remain miserable.
In the "Casa de las Estrellas" well balanced meals are served every day. Shower rooms take care of the physical well-being. A teacher helps the children with school work. An educator and a social worker offer help with problems inside and outside the "Casa de las Estrellas". Medical assistance is guaranteed by Doctor Maja Datwyler (director of the project). In addition, the children are given lessons in music, painting, sports and theatre during the school holiday (end of December to end of February). And there are regular meetings with the parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents, together with the children.
The change
The "Casa de las Estrellas" helps to improve the quality of life in regards to education, nutrition, hygiene and health. The house protects the children from psychic violence and exploitation. The “ego” of the children is strengthened and the “togetherness” is encouraged with the goal of creating responsible and self-reliant individuals that are needed so badly in Peru.
The hope
Growing from a child to a mature adult is a long-term project. Maybe the older ones will achieve professional training or the exams in a higher school. Others may want help in starting a career, such as running a shop with arts and crafts. 21 children will – almost all of them – grab their chance. In order to achieve this we must be able to rely on your support. Let me thank all of you who are interested in this project and work for it.
Sincerely,
Pia Bolliger
